Recruitment Information

Recruits for General Service who fall into the 17 - 35 age bracket, and can confirm to the medical guidelines mentioned below may apply for enlistment.

Former members of the PDF  who have not less than one years military service in the PDF and who immediately prior to discharge, held the rank of Sergeant or higher NCO rank, or of Petty Officer or higher  Naval NCO rank, and who are not more than 45 years of age on offering themselves for enlistment

Former members of the PDF who have not less than one years military service in the PDF and who are not more than 40 years of age on offering themselves for enlistment.

Procedures for Recruitment of Foreign Nationals Other Ranks into the RDF

Procedures for Citizens of European Union Member States.

(a)                 General.

An applicant who is a native born or naturalized citizen of another EU Member State may be enlisted into the RDF, providing that he/she meets the same criteria as Irish Nationals and is security cleared.  Limitations as to residency in Ireland cannot be set.

(b)                English Language Proficiency.

An applicant may be required to undergo a written and/or verbal examination to prove that he/she has a satisfactory level of English that will enable such a person to become an efficient soldier. 

(c)                 Birth Certificate.

An applicant must produce an original birth certificate and a current Passport/National ID Card.

Procedures for Citizens of States other than EU Member States

(d)                Residency in Ireland.

Foreign-Nationals must have a minimum of three years legal and unbroken residency in the State.  They must meet residency and work residency conditions as laid down by the Department of Justice Equality and Law Reform and the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment.   Applicants must have established residency and be in possession of a Certificate of Registration (also Designated the Certificate of Residency or Green Book) issued by Immigration and Citizen Division, Dept of Justice Equality and Law Reform.  This authorised period or residency must be open ended, or as a minimum must cover the period of engagement.  Care must be taken when examining this document as residency stamps vary from case to case.

(e)                 English Language Proficiency.

An applicant shall be required to undergo a written and/or verbal examination to prove that he/she has a satisfactory level of English that will enable such a person to become an efficient Reservist. 

(f)                  Birth Certificate/Documentation.

An applicant will be required to prove his/her proof of identity and produce original copies of, his/her Certificate of Registration, Birth Certificate, National Passport, Visa Stamps, and Work Permits as applicable.  If an applicant has resided in a country or countries other than his/her country of birth or Ireland, he/she will be required to produce the necessary documentation.    If an applicant holds dual citizenship, he/she will be required to produce the necessary documentation.


Joining the RDF is a simple process. Herin lie a number of steps to be completed.

Application Form.

  Each potential recruit must complete and sign an application form providing basis personal details. The recruiting staff will ensure that applicants meet the minimum requirements which are listed below. A Birth Certificate (long type) and 4 passport photos will accompany the form details.

Security Clearance.

  All applicants for the RDF must be security cleared by An Garda Síochana before we can process their application. The application form contains the details required by the Gardaí. In the event that an applicant is deemed to be unsuitable for the RDF, we are not given any details.

Medical Examination.

  The medical examination consists of two parts. The first part is conducted by medical staff in Collins Barracks Military Hospital. It consists of checks for eyesight, colour blindness, hearing, respiratory function and weight and height measurements. The second part of the test is conducted in the Medical unit headquarters by a Doctor and consists of a general health check, medical history, blood pressure etc. While there is no physical fitness test, applicants must be in good physical condition.

Attestation.

  Once the security and medical checks have been completed applicants can be "attested" into the RDF. This process involves some more form filling and then an oath or declaration of loyalty. At this stage the applicant becomes a recruit and will be issued with an army number and clothing over the next couple of weeks.

Detailed Requirements.

 
Hearing: Where, in each ear, the sum of the hearing threshold levels at the low and at the high frequencies does not exceed the age-related warning levels contained in the "Guidelines on Hearing Checks and Audiometric”,  issued by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

  Colour Vision. : Normal colour vision as determined by Ishihara's test.
Vision: 
Unaided vision of not less than 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other.
General Health :  
Applicants must have no significant impairment or disability and be considered healthy and at most require only routine medical surveillance and unscheduled medical care.
Fitness :
Applicants must be capable of carrying out full military duties and fit for military training undergoing considerable exertion.
Height/Weight :
Application must have a minimum height of 5'2" (157cm) and a Body Mass Index (BMI) in the normal range of 20-25.
Age on enlistment :
Min 17 (verified with Long Birth Cert)
